A surprising read: The Royal College of General Practitioners want to stop recommending 5 portions of vegetables per day.
The main reason was cost: eating healthy was said to be three times more expensive than a junk food diet.
Does that mean that well-off people can have good healthy food and others have to be content with junk food, with all the health consequences it entails?
This is shocking, and frankly irresponsible to hear from doctors, who get the entire trust of their patients.
It is true that in recent years, organic and “healthy” foods are rising in popularity and in price. In groceries stores, you can see organic foods priced three times more than regular versions. Many recommended vegetables are also too expensive to be eaten on a regular basis.
The avocado for example is often labeled as a healthy superfood. It’s loaded with healthy fats and can be eaten in salads, sandwiches, or deserts. Its versatile, fashionable, and as a result, you can get one from $2 to $4, while you can get a big box of sweet biscuits for the same cost.
Repeat the same scenario for kale, quinoa or other vegetables and you can understand why english doctors think 5 vegetables is demoralizing for common people.
Buying soda is more expensive than drinking water from the tap.
Eating processed red meat is more expensive than eating simple carrots or black beans.
Buying sugar or sweeteners is more expensive than well.. not buying sugar.
A chocolate bar or cake as a snack is more expensive than having a banana or an apple.
And you don’t have to buy fancy coconut oil, organic kale, expensive berries or whatever is trendy. Okinawan have one of the highest life expectancy in the world with a diet composed of 80% sweet potatoes and a bit of spices (turmeric, ginger). That’s a cheap staple with lots of benefits.
We can go further but I think you get the picture. It is perfectly possible for anyone to have a healthy cheap diet, assuming you stick to basics. Legumes, simple veggies, fruits, and adding a bit of nuts and spices to round it up. Easy? No. Feasible? Yes. Delicious and Satisfying? You bet !
